The free part

What does "free" really mean?

It means i handle the design, the build, and all the words for your website without charging you anything. When it's done, you get a zip of your website files before you pay me a cent, and those files are yours to keep. What isn't free is keeping your site online, and that's true for every website out there. Every site needs hosting and a domain name no matter who builds it (even Wix and Squarespace roll hosting into their monthly price), so these are costs you'd have either way. You'll pay for hosting, which is $19.99 a month if you'd like me to take care of it (or whatever another host charges if you'd rather take your files somewhere else), and you'll buy your own domain, which usually costs about $10 to $25 a year, depending on where you buy it. Beyond that, the only things that cost money are the optional ones, like add-ons and edits after your site is finished.

What's the catch?

There really isn't much of one. i'm betting that a lot of people would rather have someone take care of hosting for them, and if that's you, that's where i make my money, along with add-ons and edits after launch. If you don't want any of that, you can take your files and host them anywhere you want, and you won't owe me anything. The two small things to know are that your site will have a little credit link in the footer (you can have it removed for $499), and i might show your site in my portfolio unless you tell me not to.

Do i own my website?

Yes. You get a zip of all your website files the day it's finished, before you pay anything, and they're yours to keep no matter what. You also own your domain, since you buy it yourself and it's in your name. If you ever want to move your site somewhere else, you can.

Do i have to host with you?

Nope, hosting with me is completely optional. If you'd rather handle it yourself, you can download your files and put them on any web host you like. If you'd rather not deal with any of that, i'll take care of hosting for $19.99 a month, or $219.89 a year, which saves you $19.99.

What if i don't like it?

Then tell me what you'd change, and i'll work on it in your revision rounds. You get up to 5 free rounds on your first build, which gives you a lot of room to get it right. And if it turns out it's just not for you, you don't owe me anything, because the build is free.

Your build

How does the waitlist work?

First, you fill out the short form on this page. Then i'll email you a link to my intake form, which is a Google Form about your business and what you want your site to do, and if it slips your mind, i'll send you a friendly reminder at 3, 7, 14, and 30 days before i stop bugging you. You're officially on the waitlist once your intake is submitted, and after that i'll email you every two weeks to let you know your spot in line. My emails come from my own Gmail, so keep an eye out for an email from Miller.

How long is the wait?

It depends on how many people are ahead of you. i handle every site myself, so i can only take on so many at a time, and i'm still learning how many i can comfortably handle. Your position emails every two weeks will tell you exactly where you are in line, and since i'm just opening the waitlist, i'll add a real time estimate to those emails, and to this page, as soon as i have one.

How long does it take once my spot opens?

Once your spot opens and i have your intake, photos, and logo, i'll have a first draft ready for you within 7 days, and if anything ever slows me down, i'll tell you and give you a new date. After that, it mostly depends on how quickly you send me your feedback, since you get up to 5 rounds of revisions. A lot of the timing is in your hands, so the faster you reply, the sooner your site is done.

What counts as a revision?

One revision is one round of feedback. You look over the site and send me one list with all the changes you want, i make them, and that counts as one round. You get up to 5 free rounds on your first build. It helps to gather feedback from anyone else who needs to weigh in before you send your list, so nothing gets missed. If you still want changes after your fifth round, i'll quote them like regular edits.

What do you need from me?

Mostly your answers to the intake form, your own photos and logo, and your feedback on the draft. You'll also need to buy your own domain before your site goes live. That's really it, and i handle the rest.

Who handles the words?

i do, and it's included for free. i handle all the words on your site based on what you tell me in your intake form, so the more you share about your business, the more the site will sound like you. You'll get to read it all in your first draft and ask for changes during your revision rounds.

What about photos?

You'll need to send me your own photos, because i don't use stock photos. i want your site to show your real work and your real business, and people can usually tell when they're looking at stock photos anyway. When you're ready, reply to my email with your photos and logo attached. Gmail scans attachments for viruses and has a 25MB limit per email, so if you have a lot of photos, just send them over a few emails. Clear, well-lit photos from your phone work just fine.

How many pages can i have?

There's no set limit, within reason. Most small businesses need a handful of pages, like a home page, an about page, a services or menu page, and a contact page, and i'll suggest what makes sense based on your intake. "Within reason" means i'll build what a small business normally needs, but i can't build you a 75-page site for free.

Can my site have a booking link, a map, or my Google reviews?

Usually, yes. The intake form asks which features you want, and things like a booking link, a map, a menu or price list, your Google reviews, links to your social pages, and an email signup can be added using tools you already have. A custom contact form is a $5-a-month add-on that's available when i take care of your hosting, or if you'd rather not pay for one, i can link to a Google Form, which is totally free. Complicated custom features and integrations aren't part of the free build, though simple links or buttons out to tools you already use, like Toast or Calendly, are totally fine. If an outside tool like a booking app or a reviews widget changes something on its end, that's not something i can fix for free.

Who is this for, and who is it not for?

It's for anyone who needs a fast, free website that won't need a lot of changes once it's up, like contractors, restaurants, salons, photographers, nonprofits, and churches. It's not a good fit for online stores, large companies, web apps with logins or memberships, or anyone who wants to edit their site themselves, since it's custom built in code and there's no drag-and-drop builder. If you want more than a site that mostly stays the same, ask me about retainers.

Do you redo existing websites?

Yes, and redesigns get the same free deal. If your current site is slow, or you're on Wix, Squarespace, or something else and you want to move off of it, i'll rebuild your site from scratch with the same look and feel, using your current site and your intake answers as a guide, so it looks familiar but loads a whole lot faster. i'll bring over your own words, photos, and logo, but i won't copy the template or code from your old platform, since those usually belong to the company that made them. Just don't cancel your old plan until your new site is live, especially if you bought your domain through that same company.

Domains

Do i need to buy a domain?

Yes. Your domain is your web address, like yourbusiness.com, and you buy it yourself from a domain company like Cloudflare, Namecheap, or GoDaddy, so it's in your name and on your account. A .com usually costs about $10 to $25 a year, depending on where you buy it, and the first year is often discounted, so check the renewal price too. Picking and buying it is up to you, but you don't need one before i start building. You'll just want it before your site goes live.

How do i connect my domain?

Once your site is done, you can connect your domain yourself by changing a few settings at the company you bought it from. i'm putting together free video walkthroughs that show you exactly how, and they're coming soon. If you'd rather not mess with it and you're hosting with me, i'll do it for you for $99, and if you're not happy with how it went, just tell me within 30 days and i'll refund the full $99. If you host somewhere else, ask me first and i'll tell you whether i can help.

Hosting, billing, and canceling

What does hosting include?

Hosting with me is $19.99 a month, or $219.89 a year, which gets you one month free. It includes fast global hosting, SSL security (that's the little padlock next to your web address), and backups. It also comes with my promise that if something breaks on my end, i fix it free.

My end means your site goes down because of hosting, your SSL padlock expires, there's a bug in the code i delivered, a contact form i set up stops working, or an edit i made breaks something.

It's not my end if there's a problem with your domain account or the DNS settings there, if your domain doesn't get renewed, if an outside tool changes on its end (like a booking app, a Google reviews widget, or a social feed), or if someone else made changes to your site. New content and new features aren't covered either, since those are paid edits.

How do i pay?

Everything goes through Square. Hosting is a Square subscription that renews monthly or yearly, depending on which you pick, and one-time things like edits and add-ons are paid upfront with a Square invoice. You can pay with a debit or credit card, and you don't need a Square account to do it.

What happens if i stop paying?

If a hosting payment doesn't go through, you get a 7-day grace period, and i'll send you a friendly reminder or two. If it's still unpaid after that, your site goes offline until it's paid, and you won't be billed for any new month or year while it's offline. Your files are still yours either way, so nothing is lost, and once you're caught up, i'll put your site back online.

Can i cancel anytime?

Yes. There's no long-term contract, so you can cancel whenever you want by using the Cancel my hosting link at the bottom of this page, replying to any billing email from me, or using the Manage Subscription link in any of your Square subscription emails. Your cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you've already paid for, so your site stays up until then, and i don't give partial refunds for the rest of a month or year, except in a few situations that are spelled out in my Terms. If you want your site to stay online after that, point your domain to its new home before your hosting ends.

Do you offer refunds?

The website build is free, so there's nothing to refund there, which is kind of nice. For the $99 domain connection, if you're not happy, tell me within 30 days and i'll give you a full refund. Hosting doesn't come with partial refunds, except in a few situations that are spelled out in my Terms, but you can cancel anytime and you won't be charged again. For edits and other one-time add-ons, you'll approve the price before you pay, and if i can't deliver what i quoted, i'll refund you in full. If i miss a 24-hour rush deadline, i'll refund the $99 rush fee.

Will you take over my website and ruin my life?

Ha, no. You own your domain, so you decide what it's connected to, and you already got your site files the day it was finished. If you ever want to hit the eject button, just park your domain at your registrar (or point it somewhere new), and my work goes quiet. (Sad, but i get it.)

After launch

Can i edit it myself?

Not really, and that's on purpose. Your site is custom built in code, so there's no drag-and-drop builder or editing dashboard, and making changes takes someone who knows code. That's part of what keeps it fast and clean. When you need a change, send me an Edit Request, or since you own your files, you can hire any web developer you like.

How much do edits cost, and how fast are they?

Edits after launch run $49 to $500, depending on what you're asking for, and i'll always quote you the price before i start. You pay upfront with a Square invoice, and once it's paid, standard turnaround is 3 business days. If you need it sooner, rush turnaround is 24 hours for an extra $99. Anything that broke on my end is fixed free if you host with me, and if you want changes on a regular basis, ask me about retainers, which come with unlimited edits.

Does my website have good SEO?

SEO is a fickle creature that moves swiftly and silently, so i'll only tell you the truth about it, and the truth is that nobody can honestly promise you the top spot on Google. Google says it rewards helpful, relevant content first, and page experience, like how fast your site loads and how well it works on a phone, also plays a part. Speed matters, but it isn't Google's number one ranking factor, no matter what you've heard. What i can tell you is that every site i take on is built fast and clean, and i make sure your words clearly say what you do and where you do it. If you want, i'll also set up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for you and submit your site to be indexed for $99. Anyone can do that part for free, so you'd be paying for me to handle the setup, not for a magic button.

Is my site ADA compliant?

i follow accessibility best practices on every site i build, like readable text, good color contrast, image descriptions for screen readers, and pages you can get around with just a keyboard. That said, i can't guarantee that any site is fully ADA compliant, and making sure your website meets accessibility laws is your legal responsibility as the business owner. If accessibility is a big concern for your business, it's a good idea to talk to an attorney or an accessibility specialist. And if you host with me and a problem turns up in the code i delivered, i'll fix it for free, since that's on my end.

Will you show my site in your portfolio?

Probably, because i'm proud of the sites i build and i like showing them off. If you'd rather i didn't, just tell me, anytime, and i'll leave yours out, even if it's already up.

About me

Are you a real person?

Yep, i'm Miller, the guy in the suit at the top of the page. i'm based in Florida, i have a day job, and i handle these sites myself on the weekends. You'll be dealing with me the whole way through, from your first email to your finished site.

Do you work outside Florida?

Yes, i work with small businesses anywhere in the United States, and since everything happens over email, it doesn't matter which state you're in. i'm not able to take on businesses outside the US right now, though.

Do you offer retainers?

i do. If you want a site that changes more often, i have retainer options with unlimited edits. Send me a message through the contact form and ask me about retainers, and i'll walk you through how they work.

Is my information safe?

i'm careful with it. i only use the information you send me to build and look after your website and to email you about it, and i don't sell it to anybody. What you send through the forms on this site is stored with my web host, Netlify, your intake answers are stored in my Google account, and payments go through Square, so i never see your full card number. This site only loads analytics and ad tracking if you say okay to cookies. You can read all the details in my Privacy Policy.
